The excitement is building for Pat Fatmucket! Once a lonely clam, the Fatmucket is the star of the show for our big ride May 12.

What a great way to celebrate Mother's Day weekend! Join us at Elizabeth Brinkley Park (see map) for the 8:30 a.m. start. Everyone will ride down to the end of Bella Coola Road. We'll turn around and ride all the waaaay around the lake to the dam, and then return to E.B. Park.

We have fun little surprises waiting for you at the end of each road, so put your happy-clam face on, and get yourself in gear for Pat!

With the goal of helping Columbus County residents improve their fitness year-round, the Take the Lake committee is offering a separate bike ride May 12 that may prove even more popular than the “Bike & Hike” on Labor Day weekend.

That would make for an exciting event, as more than 500 people rode around Lake Waccamaw last Labor Day weekend, “biking” on the paved roads,

We installed mile markers on roads and no-wake poles around the lake last year; 15 on land and 14 on the water.

Our participants find them helpful in completing their challenges, and people use them year-round to help track their walks, runs, cycles or paddles. The aerial photo at left shows where each pole is. Click on the image for a larger version.

For those people who think they could never complete one of the four Take the Lake Personal Endurance Challenges, we have one point to make; you are the reason we organize this event each year. We don't do this for marathoners, triathloners and Iron Men and women. We've designed the Walk / Run, Paddle, Bike & Hike and Swim PECs just for you, and here's a pretty inspirational story, just in time to get you training for Labor Day weekend!

Reprinted from the March 19 edition of The News Reporter.

The Take the Lake committee got an early start on the 2012 season by announcing its theme for the year. The theme will be “educators,” which the committee announced at meetings of both the city and county school boards and at a county principals meeting.

The Take the Lake committee has worked to improve the physical fitness for all Columbus County residents, and is pursuing this goal mostly through

One of our participants wrote us a nice note about her experience, and we'd like to share it with you here, to inspire you for TTL 2012.

"In July 2009 I was 240 pounds and wore a size 22 pants.  When I participated in Take The Lake 2010 I was 151 pounds (lost 89 lbs) and wearing a size 4.  During the past year I have starting eating 6 healthy meals a day and implemented an intensive weight lifting program thanks to my personal trainer.

"Prior to July 2010 I had only jogged 2 miles on a treadmill.  A coworker of

Visit the site for our latest little fitness project. Walk With Jesus is not your ordinary walkathon or 5k run, but much more!

On Easter Sunday, we'll have a sunrise service in downtown Whiteville. Then we'll handwrite the entire New Testament. That will take about 1,000 people on more than three miles of sidewalk, which will make for a very interesting and long walk to see it all!

Here's the website!

Congratulations to Rachel Smith and her volunteers, who organized a 5K run this weekend. The Reindeer Dash attracted nearly 200 participants who ran from Edgewood Elementary School in Whiteville, through McKenzie Woods subdivision a few times, and back.
Open to the public, the event was also a final run for area schoolchildren participating in Girls on the Run and STRIDE programs. Smith has been integral in bringing those exciting exercise and confidence-building programs to the county, and we are so pleased with her efforts!

We have heard of a few exercise clubs in the county, and we would like encourage them to grow and for you to join them, so here is what we know:

I have got to streamline this process next year so I can post your times quicker, but for now, I'm just thrilled I have them ready for you. I still need to get some bugs out, and then I'll post the names, without times, in The News Reporter. So look for your name in print, coming soon to a newsstand near you!

I don't know what I would have done without the BB&T Official Take the Lake Timing Crew. You think this took a while, well, without them, I'd still be at square one.  Thanks, BB&T and all volunteers!

Find your times listed under each PEC.
