  • STAY ON THE TRAIL in the park. Follow the marker flags.
  • Your bike must be with you at all times; shuttling bikes by motor vehicle to avoid pushing them in the park is not permitted.
  • Crossing the concrete dam takes agility - ask for assistance.
  • This is not a guided trip, and you must make your own decisions regarding your abilities and the weather.
  • Also swimming? Save your bib.
  • Drink before you get thirsty.
  • Always ride with traffic.
  • Do not block the traffic lane.

Listen to your teacher!
We've adopted themes to make Take the Lake unique and fun each year,
and for 2012, we're paying tribute to educators.
So, please forgive us if we sound a bit like
your third-grade teacher...

The Take the Lake Bike & Hike

Assembly: Dale’s parking lot, from 1:15–1:45 p.m.
Instructions: 1:45 p.m. sharp

Bike & Hike
Training Schedule

By July 1:
Ride for at least 15 minutes
at least once each week

By August 1:
Ride for at least 45 minutes
2 times each week.

By Sept. 1:
Ride for at least one hour,
and push bicycle one mile.

But, can you do it?
Do not attempt this Personal Endurance Challenge if you cannot easily: Bicycle for one hour, and walk for 30 minutes easily.

The above schedule is a minimal training estimate for an average person and it in no way guarantees success. Always consult a health or fitness professional before embarking on a new exercise regimen.

Class Guidelines

  • Relax kids, this is a cake exam! Leisurely pedal 12 miles on the quiet streets of Lake Waccamaw and wave to everyone. Walk your bicycle along three miles of Lake Waccamaw State Park trails and over the dam.
  •  On the road, ride with traffic and do not block the lane. Watch out for vehicles, and yield to them. Ride single file when necessary, or you’ll hear from the school nurse!
  •  Bicycles must not be ridden on the state park trails, as it is dangerous for you and other participants, and harmful to the trail. Fine + court costs = $156, and you will receive an F.
  •  Roots on the trail can damage fine tires of expensive touring bicycles, so post-grad cyclists might consider carrying their equipment through the park.
  •  Your bike must be with you at all times; shuttling bikes to avoid pushing them through the park will result in an F.
  •  Are you in the right mood for this class? If you want to ride your bike illegally on the walking trails, or hustle through this beautiful park, then don’t register. This is the shortest class all weekend, so please relax and enjoy it. Don’t make us get out the ruler!
  •  This exam will take about an hour to bike and about an hour to hike, so plan to Take this Lake in 2-3 hours, with breaks.
Take the Lake is possible because of support from The News Reporter, Columbus County Healthy Carolinians, and donors like you!.
