How the man from Aberdeen found Take the Lake
Eric Fogelman in 2011 Take the Lake X-TREME!
My wife, Vickie, grew up in Tabor City. Last year, while visiting her mother at Liberty Commons, in Whiteville, Vickie, saw a flier advertising Take The Lake 2010.
She was familiar with Lake Waccamaw, having attended Ambassador camp at Camp Anchor, and visited cousins at their lake house.
We signed up, participated in the run/ walk, paddle, and bike. It was a festive atmosphere, like being in a parade. The locals offered us food, drink and encouragement all along the route.
One of the churches held a luncheon/ plate sale on Saturday. Everyone was so kind. We had a great weekend, but were in no way ready to consider "the swim".
During the bike portion, Vickie met a couple of her cousins whom she had not seen in several years. They have a house on the lakefront that Vickie had spent summertime weeks visiting. We had a great time biking together and visiting.
We ended up joining them for dinner, during which we asked about that crazy swim across the lake. Each of the cousins reported having done "the swim" as teenagers, and now several of their children have completed the challenge.
Now the wheels were turning. Knowing Vickie to be a stronger swimmer, I offered to paddle as her safety boater. Knowing my competitive nature, she offered to paddle while I did the swim. Neither of us attempted the swim in 2010, but we both had begun our plans to do all four challenges in 2011.
Since early this spring, Vickie has had several injuries that have limited her running. So she has turned to swimming for a lower impact aerobic workout. We have both taken swim lessons, and spent hours in the pool in preparation for Labor Day TTL 2011.
About 6 weeks ago when we went online to register for TTL, we learned of the TTL/ Extreme scheduled for the weekend prior to Labor Day. We had so much fun over the Labor Day weekend last year, reconnecting with friends and relatives, exploring a hidden gem of a State Park, eating at Dales Seafood, visiting Liberty Commons, camping, and visiting Grapefull Sister's Vineyard.
We knew that we wanted to do the TTL again this year and each of us wanted to do "the swim" challenge. We had imagined recruiting friends or relatives to be our safety kayakers, but TTL/Extreme being the week before would allow each of us to "spot " for the other.
Who would of thought that weather would again change our plans? So the plan is for me, Eric, to do TTL/Extreme Saturday 8/27/11, weather permitting. Vickie and I will then to do the run/ walk, paddle, and bike challenges together Labor Day weekend. Monday morning, Labor Day, I will paddle and serve as her "spotter" as she swims the Lee J. Greer challenge across Lake Waccamaw.
My dream is to swim 4.5 hrs, bike 1.5 hrs, kayak 3 hrs, and run/walk 3 hrs for a total of 12 hours.
