More than 200 people have registered online for Take the Lake, and we hope to surpass last year’s total of 829 people participating in 1,035 Personal Endurance Challenges.

Both “dry” PECs – the Walk / Run and the Bike & Hike – will again go in a clockwise direction. Directions of the Paddle and the Swim will be determined by wind conditions.

T-shirts should be ready for the Aug. 27 opening of the “TTL Bookstore,” which has been moved to the county tourism office inside the chamber of commerce building in Whiteville, at 601 S. Madison St.

T-shirts may be pre-ordered at Takethelake.org, good if you actually want a shirt in your size before they run out, and, if you can save

two bucks off the $12 price before August 10. Pick them up at the TTL Bookstore or at the event.

A new feature of the Labor Day weekend event is the Harry’s Halfway Hallelujah! that will let people know two things: that they have completed half of their PEC, and that they have half to go. It may seem funny to some, and not to some, but the namesake of this cool milestone marker will be Harry Foley of the Lake, and he may appear with some of the markers, and that will be funny to all.

Also, the small, blue mile markers beside the roadways that some people missed, will not be missed this year as they will grow into larger, bright yellow markers. A creative person has sponsored these, so Walk / Runners and Bike & Hikers can expect to be entertained with pithy and witty sayings along the route. Sponsors are needed for the halfway markers and the teachers’ lunch.

Most of the 359 Run / Walkers last year enjoyed the military tribute lunch afterward, which will be a teachers’ tribute lunch this year.

The meal is served yards from the finish line in the scenic linear park behind the Visitors Center of Lake Waccamaw State Park, and we're looking for sponsors of this popular event.

Columbus County Shriners lead the effort, with other civic groups pitching in to make healthful sandwiches with plenty of vegetables. Dessert is a serving of cut fruit in an ice cream cone.
