This was my 2-nd year paddling. I know "It's NOT a race" but...the event inspired me to get "healthier" & paddle faster. I quit smoking to "get in shape" for this event. I made 5+ paddles around the lake in preparation for TTL 2012...& even bought a "faster kayak" than the 1 I borrowed last year. Most of the paddlers who read this will remember me. I had a great start....near the front of the pack. At almost mile 2 I was paddling in 6-th place. (This is NOT a race I repeat!) There's probably a few paddlers who were in the top 10 laughing at me! My paddle SNAPPED into 2 pieces at this point! Was actually a quiet bend....& a half paddle in each hand as I looked in AMAZEMENT.....deciding whether to cry or WHAT! I decided (if you can call it that in milli-seconds that seemed like hours) to paddle the 3/4 mile back to "MY pier" & drag the kayak onto the deck. Game over! I paddle with half a paddle as fast as I can....BACK towards....home......as the entire field of paddlers go by. I even offered a paddler $100 for his paddle at 1 point. Then I see a boat nearing "MY pier". "They're sending me a spare paddle" I hope. The boat brings me the paddle as I continue paddling in the wrong direction. Thank you to whoever my family & friends flagged down for the new paddle!! So.....OFF I go! I paddle my ...hmmmm....arse off! I begin to pass a few paddlers. No offense to any of you (This is NOT a race). I was on a QUEST to beat my best time. Actually....at this time...I just wanted to FINISH. I only remember passing a few boats! SERIOUSLY! I'd see 1 or 2 boats & "WORK" to "go on"! I finished 14-th....meaning I passed quite a few boats...........I KNOW it's NOT a race....but I had fun. 1 last thing....I would have quit when my paddle snapped....but I read Bill Chepul's inspirational story & I kept going. Was hoping for a better finish....but....maybe this was better?

Great job, Ken! Hilarious story, and the part I like most - really like - is that you quit smoking. Man, I hope you can make that last, and you have placed first in our books!
